Hearing Helpers, in collaboration with Integris Third Age Life Center and ABLE Tech provides the resources for the Faye Donalson Hearing Helpers demonstration room. The Hearing Helpers demonstration room is open daily, except for holidays, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Hearing Helpers demonstration room provides hands-on demonstrations of a number of devices, specifically designed to help the hearing impaired. Whether you are interested in devices for yourself, for a loved one with hearing loss, or for a friend or neighbor, trained volunteers will demonstrate items that are commercially available to you. Products include amplified telephones, alerting devices for the phone and door bell, and devices for quiet listening to the TV. These items are appropriate for people of all ages, who have a hearing loss.

The National Theatre of the Deaf (NTD) is a touring theatre company of Deaf and hearing actors that performs in a unique theatrical style that it created. That style links the visually expressive American Sign Language with the spoken word, allowing audiences to see and hear every word. Composed of 3 wings, NTD offers something for everyone. The Little Theatre of the Deaf (LTD) is NTD’s children’s theatre wing, Main Stage productions are intended for adult audiences, and the Actor’s Academy is a summer training program for aspiring Deaf, hard-of-hearing, and signing actors.

Services include:

  • Vocational Rehabilitation for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing provides services to help consumers get a job, keep a job, and/or get a better job, if under-employed. Counselors act as a consultant with consumers that have severe hearing loss and as a consultant with other agencies and organizations regarding resources or responsibilities. Counselors assist consumers in finding resources in the community available for people that are deaf or hard of hearing. Sign language interpreters are provided for vocational rehabilitation consumers for vocational rehabilitation services.
  • Employment Training Center can provide pre-vocational and independent living skills training for those needing assistance such as job readiness training, resume writing, job seeking and application assistance, self-advocacy training, job club and community resources.   • The Oklahoma Quality Assurance Screening Test (QAST) is the method used by the Department of Rehabilitation Services to test and evaluate the proficiency of individuals requesting Oklahoma certification as interpreters for the deaf. If you would like to complete the application for certification, it is available for download in Microsoft Word format drsQASTapp07.doc (158 KB).

A list of all certified Oklahoma interpreters, is available for download in Microsoft Word format at www.okrehab.org/oklacertint1.doc. The Oklahoma Department of Education maintains an independent list of interpreters, which can be accessed from their website, at http://se.sde.state.ok.us/eir/publicReports/InterpreterRegistry.aspx.

OSD is a residential and day school providing specialized educational services to children and youth who are deaf or hard of hearing. The School also serves as a statewide resource for the education of deaf and hard of hearing children who attend public schools in Oklahoma. Programs include:

  • Early Childhood Development Program for children ages 2-6;
  • Regional preschools in Collinsville and Edmond are provided by OSB in cooperation with local schools;
  • A comprehensive curriculum for residential and day students, with instruction in reading, language arts, math, social studies, science, physical education, fine arts, communication skills, computer skills, and other subjects;
  • Vocational and technical training;
  • Work experience in the community;
  • Social, cultural and recreational activities;
  • Student organizations;
  • Sports and athletic competitions; and
  • Outreach services including psychological and audiological evaluations, parent education programs, captioned videos, vocational and career education, counseling, and sign language instruction.

Total Source for Hearing-loss and Access (TSHA) is located in Tulsa, Oklahoma and provides comprehensive services to the Deaf and hard of hearing communities throughout Oklahoma. Their goal is to increase the independence of people with hearing loss.

TSHA's programs are far reaching. The Interpreter Referral Program provides sign language interpreters for the entire state of Oklahoma including both Tulsa and Oklahoma City, Projects with Industry (PWI) offers job placement assistance to qualified individuals and serves a large portion of the state, while the Independent Living and the Information and Referral Programs focus mainly on the Tulsa, Oklahoma area.
