• Oklahoma population in 2005: 3,433,496
• Oklahomans with disabilities, age 5 and over, civilian, noninstitutionalized: 604,245
• Year 2000 population in nursing homes and institutions for people with disabilities: 31,214
• 19.0% of civilian, noninstitutionalized Oklahomans age 5 and over have disabilities, almost one in five.
• 336,782 Oklahomans with disabilities have two or more disabling conditions.
• 190,013 Oklahomans have sensory disabilities (visual and hearing).
• 400,611 Oklahomans have physical disabilities.
• 222,779 Oklahomans have mental disabilities.
• 118,729 Oklahomans have self-care disabilities.
• 166,147 Oklahomans have “go-outside-the-home” disabilities.
• 361,145 Oklahomans of work age (16-64) have disabilities.
• In 2005, Oklahomans with disabilities were employed at a rate of 38.2% compared to 74.5% in the general work-age population.
• Population of Oklahoma City proper: 515,751
• Population of City of Tulsa: 370,447
• School enrollment grades K-12: 603,062
• Oklahomans age 65 and over number 441,763. Of these 207,800 or 47% have disabilities.
• Civilian veterans: 341,464
• Of 564,544 Oklahomans living below the poverty level in 2005, 143,594, or over one-fourth, had disabilities.

According to a U.S. Census Bureau-based estimate by the American Foundation for the Blind, .005% or five in one thousand, are legally blind, which translates to 17,739 Oklahomans based on a total population of 3,547,884. (02/14/06)

The U.S. Census Bureau does not tabulate disability status for persons under 5 years of age or those serving in the armed forces.
